Joohoney and his longtime producing compadre Ye-Yo knock it out of the park with Crescendo, which blends UK drill with traditional Korean instruments such as the geomungo and taepyeongso. It starts off as dreamy pop, but there are definitely some sexier R’n’B elements that make an appearance. Daydream is a softer, slinkier soundscape where the band’s different tonalities really shine. It’s a hell of a ride with guitar riffs and funk-rock patterns, as the vocal line ricochet between killer notes and I.M and Joohoney trading rap verses in a manner that we know and love (remember their epic Sambakja?). Beautiful Liar, the title track, deals with the paradox of being in love even in a toxic relationship. I think it’s a saying that it’d be better to know less,” he laughs.īut the hard work pays off. “How to organise my time,” says Joohoney, as Minhyuk says, “I don’t want to know.” Oh? “I don’t want to know because, when I don’t know anything, I think I could do well. While reminiscing, the chat meanders briefly to the time they first started out, as newbies. May 2023 will mark eight years since Monsta X’s debut in the K-Pop world – a lifetime in this expeditious industry. There’s a little pause and Minhyuk, Monsta X’s lead vocalist, admits, “I’m just excited and a little bit nervous.” They truly have no cause to be nervous. We’ve prepared a lot of things for them,” reveals Kihyun, the band’s main vocalist. “For me, I just want to show our stage to our Monbebe (Monsta X’s global fanbase) as soon as possible. And I’m also expecting our fans’ feedback on our new album,” kicks off Joohoney, who has contributed to five tracks in the producing and writing departments. Their leader Shownu (Son Hyun-woo), incidentally, is due for discharge from his mandatory military enlistment in April, making this an excellent first quarter for the band. Minhyuk (Lee Min-Hyuk) rounds off this quintet in what looks like a pale grey acid-washed shirt and tapered jeans. He’s dressed in a simple black hoodie and relaxed, light jeans, complementing I.M (Im Chang-kyun), who’s in all-black, more tailored sweats. Kihyun (Yoo Ki-hyun) has cut his hair shorter from when we saw him during his solo EP’s – Youth – release towards the end of October 2022. Joohoney (Lee Joo-Hoen) and Hyungwon (Chae Hyung-won) are almost twinning in fleecy plaid and light sweatpants.

Their twelfth EP, Reason – a solid six-track offering – had dropped just hours earlier, kicking off a series of promotions on a packed day.
You wouldn’t be able to guess how late it is looking at Monsta X as they harmonise on a boisterous Happy New Year, in a conversation that then bounces animatedly between English and Korean.
